NMPT targets Shimoga to boost traffic growth

New Mangalore Port is targeting Shimoga region to boost its container traffic.

P. Tamilvanan, Chairman of New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT), told Business Line that cargoes such as machinery parts used in automobile industry are now being routed through other ports in the east coast.

He said that Pearlite Lines, a major manufacturer of machinery parts in Shimoga, has diverted 16 containers stuffed with machinery parts through New Mangalore Port for export to Italy, Germany and England.

He said that he visited the factory and held discussion with the management. The management has given assurance for using NMPT for their future exports, he said.

Mahendrappa, president of Shimoga Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said that there is good potential for NMPT to explore from Shimoga region. The port officials have already held consultations with exporters from the region in this regard. He urged the importers and exporters of Shimoga to utilise the facilities available at New Mangalore Port.
