If you plan to air freight your cargo you know every gram counts as it has impact on the air freight charges. But it is necessary to know how to calculate the chargeable weight of the cargo so that the customer knows the exact price for air freighting the cargo.
Every shipment has two weight the actual weight of the cargo and the chargeable weight.
Customer needs to be informed if the air freight charges will be based on volumetric weight. Forwarders need to calculate both actual and chargeable weight and then quote their customer accordingly.
Calculation of chargeable weight:-
1. Need to know the dimension (Length x Breadth X Height) of the cargo
2. If in cms you can use the formula Length X Breadth X Height divided by 6000 = Chargeable weight will be in Kgs
3. If in inches you can use the formula Length X Breadth X Height divided by 366 = Chargeable weight will be in Kgs
For people who do not export and import regularly this is the thumb rule. The lower the density more likely the chargeable weight will be volumetric weight.
